On Tuesday, the Calcutta High Court instructed Murlidhar Sharma, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Training at the state police academy, to file a detailed report regarding allegations of physical torture made by a Leftist student leader at an all-women police station in the Paschim Medinipur district.
The petitioner, Sucharita Das, claimed she was taken to the police station amid protests on March 3 and subjected to physical harm. The court has ordered that all available digital evidence, including CCTV footage, be assessed and a report be submitted by March 25 for further hearing on March 26.
In response, West Bengal Advocate General Kishore Dutta stated that video evidence indicates no torture occurred, asserting that Das was neither formally arrested nor mistreated. The court will hear more on related accusations from another petitioner on Wednesday.
