A Mumbai court granted anticipatory bail to Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi on Tuesday. Azmi, facing legal scrutiny for recent comments praising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, argued that his remarks were spontaneous and without malintent.
The Additional Sessions Judge V G Raghuwanshi approved Azmi's pre-arrest bail plea, though a detailed court order was not yet available. Conditions for the bail included the submission of a Rs 20,000 surety bond and cooperation with police investigations at the Marine Drive police station.
Azmi, suspended from the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, is accused under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for allegedly offending religious sentiments. His lawyer, Mubin Solkar, stated the FIR lacked sufficient evidence of intent to harm. Azmi maintained his remarks were made in response to unforeseen media queries, emphasizing their context.
