Somali security forces have ended a devastating 24-hour siege at a hotel in Beledweyne, resulting in the deaths of numerous individuals, including the al-Shabab militants responsible for the attack. The deadly siege began Tuesday with a car bombing at the Cairo Hotel, which served as a meeting place for traditional elders and military officers leading the governmental offensive against al-Shabab.

On Wednesday, Mayor Omar Alasow confirmed the operation's conclusion, noting that six militants were killed. However, the civilian death toll remains uncertain, with conflicting reports. A local resident, Muhsin Abdullahi, reported the deaths of six civilians, including two traditional elders, while witness Hussein Jeelle Raage claimed 11 fatalities, including family members.

Beledweyne, positioned 335 km north of Mogadishu, is a strategic city in the fight against the al-Qaida-affiliated group. Al-Shabab, which opposes Somalia's federal government, continues to conduct attacks on government and military targets, maintaining control over portions of rural Somalia despite ongoing military pressure from government troops and African Union forces.
