In an escalating diplomatic spat, China's embassy in New Zealand has rebuked the head of New Zealand's intelligence agency for allegedly spreading false information. The controversy arose after the intelligence chief, Andrew Hampton, cautioned about Beijing's growing sway in the Pacific region.
Hampton's assertions, describing China's strategic overtures to Pacific nations as a threat, met a swift rebuttal from the Chinese embassy. Accusing Hampton of perpetuating outdated 'cold war' paradigms, China dismissed his concerns as unfounded.
Adding fuel to the fire, recent deals between China and Pacific nations, including the Cook Islands, have alarmed New Zealand and its Five Eyes allies. Despite this, China insists on transparency, denying any hidden motives in its partnerships.
