The Supreme Court has intervened in a recent judgment by the Allahabad High Court that ruled actions like breast grabbing and pulling drawstrings of 'pyjamas' do not constitute rape. Declaring the observations as insensitive, the top court has suspended parts of the judgment and expressed its serious concerns.
A bench comprising Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih pointed out the insensitivity of the high court's language. The judgment had shockingly stated that such acts didn't amount to rape, instead fitting under assault or intent to disrobe.
The apex court has issued notices to the Centre, Uttar Pradesh government, and parties involved for their responses. The contentious verdict, criticized by the Supreme Court, has prompted a review and further action. Hearings will continue in two weeks, supported by legal luminaries like the Attorney General and Solicitor General.
