Tensions have escalated following claims by Russia's defense ministry that Ukrainian forces twice attempted to breach the border into Russia's Kursk region despite Moscow's unilateral ceasefire.
The ceasefire, initiated by President Vladimir Putin, has been contentious, with both Moscow and Kyiv trading accusations of violations. Ukraine views it as a deceptive maneuver by Putin to feign a desire for peace, amid ongoing military operations.
As violence persists, casualties are reported in Ukraine's eastern and northern regions, casting a shadow over the prospects for peace. The ceasefire anniversary coincides with Russia's military parade on May 9, commemorating World War Two's end.
