U.S. Calls for Investigation into U.S. Citizen's Death in Syria
The U.S. State Department is urging an immediate investigation into the death of Hosam Saraya, a U.S. citizen, in Syria's Sweida region amid ongoing sectarian clashes. Direct discussions with the Syrian government have been initiated, underlining the urgency. The situation unfolds against a backdrop of political shifts in Syria.
The U.S. State Department is demanding an urgent investigation following the death of U.S. citizen Hosam Saraya in Syria. The citizen's death occurred last week in Sweida, a predominantly Druze region currently embroiled in sectarian violence, according to deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott.
Videos circulating on social media depict eight civilians, one supposedly Saraya, being executed by soldiers, as reported by ABC News. Pigott confirmed the U.S.'s engagement in direct discussions with the Syrian government to address this grave issue, emphasizing the need for those responsible to be held accountable.
The incident further complicates the political situation in Syria, now under President Ahmed al-Sharaa's leadership, following Bashar al-Assad's departure. Amid internal and international tensions, efforts by the U.S., including lifting sanctions, aim to integrate Syria's new government into the global community.
