No Update Decision on National Population Register Yet, Says Government

The government has not decided to update the National Population Register (NPR), although it plans to conduct the census in two phases starting June 2025. The census will include houselisting and housing conditions, followed by demographic details. Caste enumeration will be part of the census.

The government announced that no decision has been made regarding updating the National Population Register (NPR), according to a statement in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai confirmed that a census is scheduled to begin in June 2025, conducted in two distinct phases.

The initial phase will focus on houselisting and housing conditions, while the latter phase will involve a demographic evaluation, including caste enumeration.
