Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has assured German Chancellor Friedrich Merz that Israel's objective is to liberate Gaza from Hamas's control, rather than occupy the region. The aim is to establish a peaceful government in Gaza, Netanyahu emphasized as reported by the prime minister's office.
This statement came during a phone conversation on Friday, wherein Netanyahu also expressed his dissatisfaction with Germany's recent decision to suspend weapons exports to Israel. The policy move by Berlin has added a layer of complexity to Israeli-German relations, a matter Netanyahu highlighted to Merz.
Despite the setback regarding arms supplies, Netanyahu pressed for international support in establishing stable governance in Gaza to facilitate peace and security in the volatile region.
