The Technology Development Board (TDB), under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, has entered into a strategic agreement with Primary Healthtech Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, to support the development and commercialization of an innovative diagnostic solution—an IoT-enabled, AI-powered point-of-care blood testing device designed to transform healthcare accessibility and affordability in India.

A Startup with Roots in IIT Guwahati

Primary Healthtech Pvt. Ltd. was founded by Mr. Sahil Jagnani and Mr. Ankit Choudhury, alumni of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati. The company emerged from a multidisciplinary ecosystem of doctors, researchers, professors, entrepreneurs, and students committed to building low-cost, high-impact healthcare technologies.

Backed in its early stages by the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), the startup developed Mobilab, a portable, battery-operated clinical chemistry analyzer. Mobilab is not just compact and field-ready but also IoT-enabled and equipped with AI/ML algorithms, making it capable of testing over 25 vital health parameters. These include indicators for kidney and liver function, cardiovascular health, vitamin deficiencies, and early cancer markers.

Intellectual Property and Clinical Validation

The company holds a transferred patent from IIT Guwahati for “A transmittance-based system/kit for point-of-care quantification.” In addition, more than six other patent applications are in progress, covering innovations in assay development, integrated mixers, centrifuges, and optical systems.

Mobilab has already been tested in real-world conditions with over 10,000 patients and has successfully obtained a Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) manufacturing license, a crucial step toward scaling production and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Next-Generation Mobilab: Faster, Smarter, More Accessible

With support from TDB, the company aims to transition its existing Mobilab prototype (M1) into an enhanced version capable of simultaneous multi-parameter testing. The upcoming upgrade will allow the device to conduct at least five tests in a single run, significantly cutting down waiting times for patients.

The next-generation Mobilab will cover tests for:

  • Hemoglobin

  • Creatinine

  • Bilirubin

  • Cholesterol

  • Triglycerides

  • Uric Acid

  • Glucose

  • Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT)

This development positions Mobilab as one of the most versatile point-of-care diagnostic devices in India, with potential applications in rural clinics, primary health centers, and even field camps.

Government Endorsement and National Vision

At the signing of the agreement, Shri Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of TDB, emphasized the national importance of such innovations:

“Ensuring quality healthcare access in rural and remote regions is a national priority. This project not only addresses affordability and accessibility but also demonstrates India’s capability in developing indigenous, AI-powered diagnostic solutions for primary healthcare.”

The statement highlights how Mobilab aligns with India’s broader policy frameworks, including Atmanirbhar Bharat, by promoting indigenous technology development and reducing dependence on imported diagnostic solutions.

Startup Perspective: From Lab to Nationwide Deployment

The promoters of Primary Healthtech expressed optimism about scaling their innovation:

“TDB’s support will accelerate our journey from lab innovation to large-scale deployment. With Mobilab, we envision bridging the healthcare gap for rural and underserved communities, ensuring that advanced diagnostics are available at the point of care, anywhere in India.”

Their vision underscores a broader shift in India’s healthcare landscape, where technology-driven solutions are seen as the key to solving accessibility challenges in underserved regions.

A Global Outlook

The collaboration between TDB and Primary Healthtech not only strengthens India’s domestic healthcare ecosystem but also positions the country as a global player in affordable diagnostic technologies. With portable and AI-enabled solutions like Mobilab, India has the potential to contribute to global health equity, particularly in developing nations facing similar challenges of accessibility and affordability.

The TDB-Primary Healthtech partnership marks a significant milestone in India’s healthcare innovation journey. By marrying artificial intelligence with IoT-enabled point-of-care diagnostics, this project exemplifies how indigenous startups can deliver world-class, scalable medical solutions. Once fully deployed, Mobilab could redefine preventive and primary healthcare delivery, ensuring that no patient—whether in urban hospitals or rural villages—remains deprived of timely diagnostic care.
