Authorities in Assam's Tamulpur district have initiated a magisterial inquiry into allegations of lynching following a car accident that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old man, Abhishek Das. The District Magistrate cited public sentiment and media reports as reasons for the urgent investigation, appointing Trilina Tiad to lead the probe.
Abhishek Das died on August 20, after his car accident near Bharali Chowk. His family alleges he was assaulted by a mob, which is contested by local residents who claim his injuries were solely from the crash. His friends, also in the car, insisted he was attacked when leaving the vehicle to seek help.
Video footage from the incident shows the survivors inside the crashed vehicle surrounded by a mob, intensifying calls for clarity. The inquiry aims to resolve the conflicting accounts and provide a detailed report, which the appointed executive magistrate has been urged to submit promptly.
