Indonesia's Lawmakers Get Hefty Allowance Amid Public Outcry
Indonesia has increased the recess allowance for its lawmakers, even as citizens protest government spending, sparking controversy. Demonstrations in August erupted into violence due to the public's anger at perks for parliamentarians. The increase is defended by officials due to rising costs and economic challenges.
Indonesia has substantially increased the recess allowance allocated to its lawmakers, a move that comes amid a backdrop of public dissent over government spending. Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad confirmed the approximately 75% rise in the allowance, which is intended to support parliamentarians in their constituencies during parliamentary breaks.
The change, effective October 3rd, sparked memories of recent protests that saw thousands rally against perks for lawmakers. The demonstrations intensified into riots, tarnishing the nation's stability with an unprecedented outbreak of violence, resulting in 10 fatalities and thousands of arrests. The anger was initially fueled by the government's decision to increase pay for lawmakers in a commodity-rich economy facing significant poverty challenges.
Dasco defends the allowance increase, highlighting rising staple food and transport costs that were unaccounted for since the initial period began. Despite some benefits being cancelled earlier, this allowance, approved by the finance ministry in May, continues to stir public debate, with critics expressing dissatisfaction about the prioritization of government expenditures.
