In a significant crackdown, Pakistan's anti-cybercrime agency has detained over 100 social media activists associated with the radical Islamist party Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) for their inflammatory online posts, according to Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari.
Recent violence between TLP supporters and police resulted in 16 deaths and 1,600 injuries. Authorities have arrested more than 6,000 TLP activists after their protest in Islamabad, leading the government to seal 61 religious seminaries associated with the group and place them under the Auqaf Department's control.
The Punjab government recommended a party ban, which the federal cabinet has enacted. Minister Bokhari noted 3,600 financial backers of TLP were identified, and firearms seized during past incidents were reportedly used in the latest protests, reinforcing the government's stringent stance against insurgency.
