Paraguay Bolsters Morocco's Claim: Consulate Coming to Western Sahara

Paraguay will open a consulate in Western Sahara, aligning with Morocco's claim over the disputed territory. This move follows Paraguay's endorsement of Moroccan sovereignty as a resolution to the conflict involving the Algeria-backed Polisario Front. In doing so, Paraguay supports Morocco's ongoing diplomatic drive with Latin American nations.

Paraguay is set to extend its support to Morocco by establishing a consulate in Western Sahara, joining several African and Arab nations in backing Morocco's claim over the contested area. This announcement was made by Morocco's foreign ministry on Wednesday, marking a significant diplomatic development.

The enduring conflict involves Morocco, which asserts ownership of Western Sahara, and the Algeria-supported Polisario Front that advocates for an independent state. As part of Morocco's diplomatic campaign, 29 countries have so far established consulates in the cities of Laayoune and Dakhla, reinforcing Morocco's sovereignty claims.

Paraguay, after talks in Rabat, endorsed an autonomy plan for the region under Moroccan sovereignty, with Moroccan diplomacy enjoying support from the U.S., France, and the UK. However, while several European nations are in favor, the European Union continues to endorse U.N.-led attempts to find a political resolution.
