Chutia Community Stages Torchlight Protest for Scheduled Tribe Status

In Dhemaji district, thousands from Assam's Chutia community staged a torchlight protest, demanding prompt inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe category. The protest saw participants from across Upper Assam converging in Dhemaji town, marching with lit torches while chanting 'No ST, No Rest'.

The demonstration was organized by five Chutia organizations, united in their demand for ST status, a struggle dating back to 1979. Pinku Chutia, president of Chutia Yuva Sanmilan Dhemaji, emphasized the community's distinct cultural and economic characteristics that justify this recognition.

While other communities, like the Tai-Ahom and Tea-Tribes, also engage in similar protests, the government's promises remain unfulfilled. It's anticipated that the upcoming winter session will address the Group of Ministers' report on this long-standing issue.
