ASEAN's Expanding Defense Strategy: From High Seas to Cyberspace
At an ASEAN defense ministers meeting, Malaysia urged expansion of security efforts to cyberspace, highlighting regional challenges like the South China Sea tensions and cyber threats. Meetings with global partners are planned, and efforts to resolve Thailand-Cambodia and Myanmar conflicts were emphasized.
In a pivotal address, Malaysia urged its ASEAN counterparts to expand their security partnerships to cyberspace at the bloc's annual defense ministers' meeting. Defense Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin emphasized that regional peace is under threat from both traditional and emerging challenges, such as increasing tensions in the South China Sea and the surge in cyberattacks capable of destabilizing societies and governments.
The meeting is set to continue with discussions involving major global powers including the United States, China, Japan, India, Australia, South Korea, and Russia. Key attendees include US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and China's Dong Jun, as they join talks aimed at reinforcing security alliances.
Furthermore, Minister Khaled called for swift action by ASEAN nations in forming an observer team to mediate in the ongoing border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. This came on the heels of a newly signed ceasefire, witnessed by US President Donald Trump and Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The minister also reaffirmed ASEAN’s dedication to resolving Myanmar's civil conflict, emphasizing the bloc's exclusion of Myanmar's military leadership due to non-compliance with its Five-Point Consensus.
