On Monday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his absence from the oath-taking ceremony of India's new Chief Justice, Surya Kant. The event, seen as a significant national occasion, was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan and attended by India's top leadership.
Justice Surya Kant has been instrumental in several key judgments, including those on the abrogation of Article 370 and electoral roll revisions in Bihar. The Chief Justice took his oath administered by President Droupadi Murmu. Among the attendees were Vice President C P Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla expressed outrage at Gandhi's absence, speculating that he might be abroad. Poonawalla accused the Congress party of prioritizing family systems over democratic and constitutional values, expressing the BJP's stance that this reflects disrespect towards B R Ambedkar and the Constitution.
