SP President Akhilesh Yadav has accused the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls of orchestrating a 'big conspiracy' that could regress the nation to a state 'worse than the colonial era.' He calls for opposition parties to unite against what he deems a fraudulent exercise.
Yadav, via a video posted on his official social media account, urged vigilance against the alleged manipulations by the BJP. He claimed this electoral roll revision threatens to undermine democracy, warning darker implications for future records, including land and financial documentation.
The Bharatiya Janata Party countered Yadav's statements. State spokesperson Harishchandra Srivastava dismissed the claims as attempts to incite fear and confusion. He emphasized the transparency of the SIR process, noting that meetings with all political parties ensure comprehensive involvement in the voter registration process, diminishing opportunities for misinformation.
