Colombia and Clan del Golfo: Pioneering Peace Talks in Qatar
Colombia and the Clan del Golfo crime gang have agreed to gather combatants in specified areas as part of peace talks in Qatar. The arrangement seeks to reduce violence in Colombia, suspend arrest orders, and include these areas in peace programs initiated by President Gustavo Petro's government.
Colombia and the infamous Clan del Golfo crime group have reached a significant agreement in Qatar. Starting March 1, combatants will assemble in three designated areas in the country, part of a broader effort to curb violence through negotiations.
The two sides, with the Colombian government led by President Gustavo Petro, revealed on Friday that two of the gathering zones are in Choco province, and the third in Cordoba. The government statement emphasized commitments to fostering peace in these regions.
The initiative involves ten additional municipalities joining previously named areas in peace programs. Arrest orders, including extraditions, are temporarily suspended. However, achieving meaningful progress remains challenging amidst efforts for concessions like amnesty, sparking public debate.
