Qatar's Role Crucial in Negotiating Gaza Truce
The U.S.-backed truce in Gaza is at a crucial juncture, says Qatar's Prime Minister. Mediation efforts are focused on securing an extended ceasefire, amid challenges in forming an international security force. Violence has decreased since the initial truce, but tensions remain high with ongoing negotiations.
Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani described the current state of U.S.-backed truce negotiations in Gaza as being at a 'critical' stage. Speaking at the Doha Forum, he emphasized the importance of mediators in steering the ceasefire process forward.
The truce, which took effect nearly a month ago, has paused the violence, but a full ceasefire remains elusive. Al-Thani noted that stability, withdrawal of Israeli forces, and enabling movement in Gaza are yet to be achieved.
The ongoing discussions around U.S. President Trump's plan for peace in the region include challenging negotiations over an international security force. While hostages have been exchanged, Israel continues to accuse Hamas of violating the truce agreement.
