The Supreme Court of India has turned down the bail plea of Mihir Shah, the son of a former Shiv Sena leader, involved in the 2024 Mumbai BMW hit-and-run incident. The court remarked on the necessity to teach privileged individuals a lesson for their apparent disregard for the law.
Presiding Justices Dipankar Datta and A G Masih highlighted that Shah belongs to a wealthy family, and his father is affiliated with the Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's faction of Shiv Sena. The justices underlined the gravity of the offense by detailing Shah's reckless actions.
Despite Senior Advocate Rebecca John's efforts to advocate for his release, the court was not swayed, citing the severity and circumstances of the crime. Shah's actions after the accident, including fleeing the scene and attempting to tamper with evidence, further cemented the court's decision to continue his detention.
