A Maharashtra legislative council's Special Privileges Committee has suggested a five-day jail sentence for four journalists accused of defaming council member Amol Mitkari by broadcasting false news.
The committee's chairman, Prasad Lad, briefed the Upper House, highlighting how a YouTube channel, 'Satya Ladha,' disseminated misleading information about Mitkari, harming his reputation. The committee's inquiry attributed responsibility for the fabricated reports to Ganesh Sonawane, Harshada Sonawane, Amol Nandurkar, and Ankush Gawande.
Though Satya Ladha editor Satish Deshmukh issued a written apology and faced no action, the committee has proposed that the other journalists serve their sentences either during the current winter legislative session or the following one.
