A gunman assaulted Syrian and American forces in a historic town on Saturday, during an American troop visit, causing multiple injuries according to Syrian state media and a war monitor.

The incident occurred near Palmyra, as reported by the state-operated SANA news agency. It disclosed that two Syrian security members and several US service personnel were injured and swiftly transported by helicopters to the Tanf garrison located near the Iraq and Jordan border.

A US defense official, requesting anonymity, acknowledged awareness of the reports but offered no immediate information. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed at least three injuries from the shooting and identified the attacker as a Syrian security member.
