China's defence ministry has accused the Philippines of misrepresenting an incident involving the Chinese coastguard and Filipino fishermen at the South China Sea's Sabina Shoal. Manila swiftly dismissed these allegations, insisting the facts are clear.

According to the Philippine coastguard, several Filipino fishermen suffered injuries and two fishing vessels sustained damage after Chinese coastguard ships allegedly cut anchor lines and used water cannons. The Philippine defence secretary condemned the acts as 'dangerous' and 'inhumane.' However, the Chinese defence ministry justified the coastguard's actions as 'reasonable' and vowed strict responses to provocations.

Sabina Shoal, known as Xianbin Reef in China, is located in the Philippines' exclusive economic zone. This incident underscores the broader territorial tensions in the South China Sea, a vital waterway that China claims extensively, conflicting with other Southeast Asian nations. Despite a 2016 international ruling denying China's claims, Beijing remains steadfast.
