In a significant counter-terrorism operation, Pakistani authorities this year captured Sultan Aziz Azzam, identified as the spokesperson for the terrorist group Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K). The arrest was confirmed in a United Nations Security Council report, marking a notable degradation in IS-K's regional capabilities.
The UN's Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team's 16th report highlighted that extensive counter-terrorism efforts, including Azzam's arrest near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, have disrupted IS-K's ability to operate. This disruption has notably impacted their propaganda efforts through the Al-Azaim Foundation, among other activities.
Despite Kabul's assertions, the UN report claims several terrorist groups continue operating in Afghanistan. It reported disturbing activities attributed to IS-K, including indoctrination of minors and training courses for suicide attacks. The arrest of Azzam, who played a pivotal role in various high-profile terrorist attacks, signifies a strategic setback for IS-K's operations.
