Yemen's Leadership Shake-Up Highlights Regional Tensions
Yemen’s presidential leadership council has accepted Prime Minister Salem bin Breik's resignation, appointing Foreign Minister Shaya Mohsen Zindani as the new prime minister. This comes against a backdrop of heightened tensions between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, partially due to a UAE-backed separatist group's activities in Yemen.
In a significant political shift, Yemen's Saudi-backed presidential leadership council has accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Salem bin Breik and appointed Shaya Mohsen Zindani as his successor, sources from the state news agency Saba reported on Thursday.
This decision follows increasing regional tensions, as a UAE-backed separatist faction, the Southern Transitional Council, seized control of parts of southern and eastern Yemen in December, nearing Saudi Arabia's border - an action viewed as a threat by the kingdom.
Previously allied in a coalition against the Iran-backed Houthis during Yemen's civil war, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have seen their partnership strained by geopolitical and resource disputes, marking another layer of complexity in Gulf relations.
