UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged the world's leading nations to spearhead Security Council reforms. During his address to the 193-member General Assembly, Guterres emphasized that adherence to outdated structures risks current privileges. He stated that institutions must adapt to reflect today's global landscape to maintain legitimacy.

Guterres highlighted the shift in global economic dynamics, pointing out the rise of South-South trade and the waning dominance of developed economies. He argued that international financial and trade institution reforms are crucial, echoing calls for changes to the Security Council's composition.

India has been a long-time advocate for reforming the Security Council, citing the need for expansion to represent contemporary geopolitical realities. Eldos Mathew Punnoose, India's UN envoy, reiterated this stance, calling such reforms an imperative to align the UN with its founding goals of peace and security.
