In a noteworthy crackdown on alleged corruption, three police officers from Uttar Pradesh have been suspended following bribery accusations. The officers, including a station house officer, reportedly accepted a bribe of Rs 1 lakh to facilitate the release of a man involved in a kidnapping case.
The police action comes after the man, Gajendra Singh, was accused of kidnapping a girl from Kolkata and bringing her to Bahraich. Upon rescue, the accused was held at Matera police station where his brother-in-law claimed he was asked for the bribe to secure his release.
Following the allegations, Inspector General of Police Amit Pathak mandated a confidential investigation which confirmed the claims. The officers have been suspended and departmental proceedings are underway while the bribe amount has been returned to the complainant.
