Escalating Factional Clashes Amid Peace Efforts: 27 Killed in Colombia Conflict
In Colombia, intense clashes between rival guerrilla factions of FARC led to the deaths of 27 members. These clashes, which occurred in the Guaviare department, underline the broader challenges Colombia faces in its peace process. The conflict persists despite efforts to engage in peace talks.
In a violent encounter reported in central Colombia, at least 27 members of a leftist guerrilla group were killed amid clashes for control of a strategic jungle area. This incident marks one of the most intense confrontations in recent months.
The confrontation occurred in the rural municipality of El Retorno, Guaviare. It involved two rival factions of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) who split last April due to internal strife. Military sources identified the leaders as Nestor Gregorio Vera, or Ivan Mordisco, and Alexander Diaz Mendoza, alias Calarca Cordoba.
With this region pivotal for cocaine trafficking, the casualties all belonged to Vera's faction. While Diaz's group has begun peace negotiations with President Gustavo Petro, Vera's faction continues its insurgency after a ceasefire was halted. Colombia's long-standing conflict remains fraught, heavily funded by illicit activities and leaving millions affected.
