Neglected Warnings: Tragedy on Spain's Rails
A warning by Spain's train drivers' union about severe wear on high-speed rail tracks, including one involved in a fatal crash, went unheeded. Issues like potholes and poor overhead power lines were reported daily to operator ADIF, but no corrective measures were taken, according to a letter seen by Reuters.

A Spanish train drivers' union had previously cautioned rail operator ADIF about dangerous wear and tear on high-speed rail tracks. One of those tracks was the site of a fatal crash on Sunday. Reuters obtained a letter detailing issues like potholes and overhead line imbalances hampering train operations.
The letter, made public on social media and verified by SEMAF union members, emphasized frequent breakdowns and damage. Despite daily notifications from train drivers, ADIF reportedly took no action to address their concerns.
ADIF has yet to provide a response to these revelations.
