In a significant legal development, Unnikrishnan Potty, the central figure in the Sabarimala gold loss controversy, secured statutory bail on Thursday. The Kollam Vigilance Court's decision followed a delay by the police's Special Investigation Team (SIT) in filing a charge sheet within the mandated 90-day period. This lapse resulted in Potty's release from custody, although under stringent conditions.

The case revolves around the alleged gold diversion from temple artefacts, including door frames and deity idol plates, intended for replating. Potty had previously sought permission from the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) for the replating process carried out by a Chennai firm. While Potty is the first accused to gain freedom in this matter, he joins three others previously released. The court mandated that he remain out of Pathanamthitta district, avoid witness influence, and comply with law enforcement summons.

The proceedings continue as another key figure, Kandararu Rajeevaru, remains in custody with a pending bail petition. Additionally, K S Baiju, another accused, awaits his bail hearing. Despite the setbacks in the charge sheet filing, both the Kerala High Court and the Enforcement Directorate are actively monitoring the investigation, ensuring accountability in this high-profile case.
