Philippines Navigates Diplomatic Waters Amid Tensions in South China Sea
The Philippines is balancing diplomatic communications with China and strengthening relations with allies like the US and Canada. Amid ongoing maritime disputes in the South China Sea, the country is enhancing military cooperation with the US while maintaining open communication lines with China to pursue effective diplomacy.
The Philippine foreign ministry announced on Friday that it is keeping communication channels open with China, even as it strengthens ties with countries that agree with its South China Sea position.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) aims to foster candid dialogue and practical cooperation with China, while bolstering alliances with nations like the United States and Canada, spokesperson Rogelio Villanueva stated. Recently, the Philippines held talks with these countries focusing on maritime issues.
In a joint agreement, the Philippines and the US have decided to increase the deployment of advanced missile systems and unmanned technology. Despite tensions with China over territorial disputes, the foreign ministry is committed to maintaining "effective and principled diplomacy" to advance national interests, even as dialogue with Chinese officials remains challenging.
