The Supreme Court has issued a directive to establish independent appellate tribunals, headed by former high court judges, to handle appeals concerning exclusions from voter lists during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal. This decision aims to ensure fairness and integrity in the revision process, amidst allegations of irregularities.
Chief Justice Surya Kant, leading a bench, expressed strong disapproval of attempts to undermine judicial officers involved in the process. The court emphasized that no one should question the credibility of these officers, and any attempts to do so would not be tolerated. This move comes in response to petitions challenging the role of judicial officers in addressing voter list deletions.
The Election Commission and the West Bengal government were directed to support judicial officers with necessary logistical aid during the electoral roll revision. The court also stressed resolving any technical difficulties promptly to ensure a smooth process. The creation of new appellate tribunals is a step towards safeguarding the rights of individuals affected by election-related changes.
