Amid ongoing economic challenges, the Indian government has released more than Rs 81,500 crore under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) for the fiscal year 2025-26, according to recent reports.
However, the state of West Bengal has been a focal point as funds remain suspended due to compliance issues since March 2022. Minister of State for Rural Development Kamlesh Paswan highlighted pending liabilities across states, with West Bengal facing significant discrepancies. The state's liabilities, halted by the central government, are pending review for confirmation.
The situation has sparked a political tussle, with West Bengal's Trinamool Congress claiming the Centre owes Rs 51,700 crore, an amount contested by the national administration. As this fiscal impasse unfolds, implications for rural employment in West Bengal continue to emerge.
