The Gujarat government's quest for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has taken a significant step forward as the committee, led by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, submitted its final report. This pivotal document proposes a unified legal framework for all religions on sensitive personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption, with a strong emphasis on ensuring equal rights for women.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel is poised to potentially present a draft bill on the UCC during the ongoing budget session. Convened in February of the previous year, the panel's mission was to delve into various facets of the UCC. It engaged extensively with diverse communities, including convening meetings with 38 Muslim organizations and soliciting nearly 19 lakh suggestions from the public.

The proposed legal changes have sparked controversy, with demonstrations by members of the Muslim community in cities like Ahmedabad and Vadodara, protesting the UCC's implications. Despite opposition and legal challenges, the Gujarat High Court upheld the government's decision to explore the UCC, affirming the executive's prerogative under Article 162 of the Constitution.
