In a significant development, the Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to elevate the number of judges at the Supreme Court from the current 34 to 38, which includes the Chief Justice of India. The announcement was made by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who indicated that a bill facilitating this change would be introduced in the forthcoming session of Parliament.
Historically, the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court has seen multiple increases, with the last notable adjustment taking place in 2019, when the number was raised from 30 to 33. Prior to this, the Supreme Court's roster was expanded in various increments, reflecting the evolving needs of the Indian judicial system.
The proposed expansion is aligned with recommendations made by the Chief Justice of India to the Union Law Minister, aiming to accommodate the growing backlog of cases. The decision underscores a commitment to reinforcing judicial capacity in India's apex court, pending approval and enactment by Parliament.
