Southeast Asian leaders are preparing a contingency plan emphasizing international law, sovereignty, and freedom of navigation. This strategy responds to Middle East conflict impacts, covering energy solutions and regional security. The plan will be revealed at the ASEAN summit in Cebu, focusing on resilience, food and energy security, and protecting workers.
Southeast Asian leaders are set to issue a comprehensive contingency plan emphasizing the importance of international law, sovereignty, and freedom of navigation. This initiative comes in response to the ongoing Middle East conflict, perceived as an indirect critique of the involved nations such as the United States, Israel, and Iran.
The declaration will be made at the forthcoming ASEAN summit in Cebu, the Philippines, spearheaded by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The summit's agenda will prioritize regional energy security, food supply stability, and safeguarding workers in conflict zones, like the over a million Southeast Asian workers based in the Middle East.
The leaders aim to develop a crisis management blueprint that includes emergency fuel sharing agreements and regional energy diversification. The strategy underscores the necessity of open maritime lanes and the free movement of essential goods. The ASEAN bloc, which recently welcomed East Timor, seeks to reinforce regional cooperation and resilience amid global economic challenges.
