The New Zealand Government is investing in a series of initiatives aimed at helping rural communities better prepare for and respond to adverse events, with new funding announced for regional support groups, volunteer networks, and leadership development programmes. Agriculture Minister Todd McClay and Rural Communities Minister Mark Patterson revealed a package of measures designed to strengthen resilience across rural New Zealand before emergencies occur, helping communities build the skills and resources needed to recover more quickly when challenges arise.

Funding to Strengthen Regional Support Networks

The Government will provide $160,000 to enhance the capabilities of New Zealand's 16 Rural Advisory Groups, which play an important role in supporting farmers, growers, and rural communities during difficult periods such as severe weather events and natural disasters.

These groups bring together representatives from across the primary sector, including organisations such as Federated Farmers, Beef + Lamb New Zealand, and DairyNZ. Their local knowledge and industry expertise often make them a key source of guidance and coordination when communities face disruption.

Todd McClay said farmers and growers have repeatedly seen the value of these groups during challenging times, with many providing practical assistance and advice when it is needed most.

Boost for Taskforce Kiwi Volunteers

A further $50,000 will be allocated to Taskforce Kiwi, allowing the organisation to mobilise and deploy skilled volunteers more quickly to rural communities affected by disasters.

Taskforce Kiwi has become a familiar presence during recovery efforts, helping communities tackle urgent tasks following storms, floods, and other adverse events. The additional funding is expected to improve the organisation's ability to respond rapidly and provide support where it is most needed.

McClay said rural New Zealand is filled with people willing to step forward during emergencies, and the Government wants to ensure those individuals have the tools and support required to make a meaningful difference.

Developing Future Rural Leaders

Another $50,000 will support programmes focused on building the skills and capacity of rural leaders, helping communities plan for long-term resilience and prepare for future challenges.

Rural Communities Minister Mark Patterson said strong communities are built well before adversity strikes. Effective preparation, local connections, and capable leadership all play a major role in determining how communities respond when difficult situations arise.

He said investments in initiatives such as Rural Advisory Groups and Taskforce Kiwi help create stronger, more confident communities that are better equipped to respond, recover, and continue thriving after adverse events.

The funding package reflects the Government's broader focus on ensuring rural New Zealand remains resilient, with support aimed at strengthening preparedness today while building greater community capability for the future.
