India and Nepal have taken another step in strengthening their digital and economic relationship with the launch of a peer-to-peer (P2P) cross-border remittance system. The service became operational on June 6, 2026, allowing people in both countries to send money instantly through their mobile banking apps and digital wallets.
The new arrangement directly connects India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Nepal's National Payments Interface (NPI), creating a faster and more convenient way for individuals to transfer funds across the border without relying on traditional banking processes.
A New Chapter in Digital Payments
The integration allows users in India and Nepal to make real-time money transfers securely from their smartphones. Families, students, workers, and businesses that regularly move money between the two countries can now complete transactions within seconds.
The project was implemented through collaboration between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India, and Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL). Their joint effort has created a payment corridor that supports growing financial and social interactions between the neighboring nations.
The launch reflects a broader push toward making cross-border payments more accessible and affordable while deepening regional digital connectivity.
Easier Payments for Travelers and Businesses
The new payment link is expected to make travel between India and Nepal much smoother. Visitors can make payments digitally without carrying large amounts of cash or spending time exchanging currency. Transactions can be completed using familiar payment platforms already available on their phones.
Local businesses in Nepal could also see significant benefits. Indian tourists represent a large customer base, and easier digital payments may encourage more spending at hotels, restaurants, retail outlets, and tourist destinations.
Merchants can receive payments instantly, reducing dependence on cash transactions and lowering the challenges associated with cash handling. Faster settlements also improve day-to-day business operations and help manage cash flow more efficiently.
Strengthening Regional Financial Connectivity
The UPI-NPI linkage is being viewed as an important milestone in advancing financial inclusion across South Asia. Direct digital transfers offer a secure alternative to traditional remittance channels and can support stronger economic ties between communities that share close cultural and commercial connections.
India has steadily expanded UPI's global footprint over the past few years. Indian travellers can already use UPI for payments in nine countries, including Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Bhutan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia.
With Nepal now connected through a dedicated remittance mechanism, the latest development adds another layer of convenience for millions of people who maintain personal, business, and family ties across the India-Nepal border. The move is expected to encourage wider adoption of digital payments while supporting closer economic integration between the two countries.
