Ethiopia: 32 individuals detailed in telecom fraud, Country incurs a loss of $1.1m

The Ethiopian Federal Police has arrested 32 individuals engaged in telecom fraud sharing the state monopoly's Ethio Telecom business.
According to Police TV report, the arrest is made over the last six months and the people have been arrested for using varied devices and modems in the illegal telecom business. The report further stated that the country has lost more than 30 million birr (USD 1.1 million).
New Business Ethiopia noted that the Information Network Security Agency of Ethiopia that the country already incurred a loss of more than 1 billion birr (USD 35.5 million) due to telecom fraud in the mid of 2016. Even Ethio Telecom reported in March 2017 a loss of USD 52 million every year due to telecom fraud.
Communications Fraud Control Association noted that the mobile network operators lost over USD 38 million due to telecom fraud.
