Secretary of State Antony Blinken will press for a significant breakthrough on President Joe Biden's cease-fire proposal during his eighth diplomatic mission to the Middle East next week, the State Department confirmed on Friday.
Currently in France with President Biden for a state visit marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion, Blinken is scheduled to fly from Paris to Cairo on Monday. There, he will meet Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and other officials before proceeding to Israel, Jordan, and Qatar. Following these meetings, Blinken will join Biden in Italy for a Group of Seven summit.
In his engagements, Blinken intends to underscore the necessity of Hamas accepting the nearly identical cease-fire proposal it endorsed last month, emphasizing the mutual benefits for both Israelis and Palestinians, according to State Department spokesman Matthew Miller. This proposal aims to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and improve the overall stability of the region.
