Bulgaria's Fragmented Parliament: GERB Secures Most Votes Amid Record Low Turnout

Bulgaria’s parliamentary elections have resulted in the GERB party, led by Boyko Borissov, receiving most votes. However, they will need at least two partners to form a coalition. Voter turnout was low at 30%, leading to a fragmented parliament, potentially necessitating another election later this year.

Bulgaria's centre-right GERB party, spearheaded by former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, garnered the most votes in the recent parliamentary election. However, forming a governing coalition will require the support of at least two additional parties.

This election, coinciding with European Parliament elections, marked the sixth vote for the National Assembly in just three years. Apathy among voters resulted in a record-low turnout of about 30 per cent.

As vote counts reach 64 per cent, GERB leads with 23.7 per cent, trailed by the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms party at 15.9 per cent, with the pro-Western reformist bloc 'We Continue the Change' closely following. The results hint at another possible snap election later this year, given the fragmented parliament.
