North Korean leader Kim Jong Un lauded the burgeoning relationship with Russia on Wednesday, amid reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin is poised to visit North Korea for a third meeting with Kim.
The military, economic, and other collaborative exchanges between North Korea and Russia have significantly increased since Kim's trip to Russia last September. The United States, South Korea, and their allies suspect North Korea of supplying Russia with artillery, missiles, and other conventional arms to aid Russia's war effort in Ukraine, in exchange for advanced military technology and economic assistance.
Kim aims to bolster alliances with Russia and China to fortify his regional influence and present a united opposition against the United States. Following their September meeting at Russia's principal space launch facility, Kim invited Putin to visit North Korea, which Putin accepted. Kim recently sent Putin a congratulatory message on Russia's National Day, hailing their countries' 'unbreakable relationship of comrades-in-arms.'
Media reports indicate Putin could visit North Korea and Vietnam as soon as next week, seeking stronger military ties with North Korea as Russia faces weapon shortages amid the Ukraine conflict. North Korea, in turn, hopes for assistance with space technology following its failed satellite launch in May.
Although neither Russia nor North Korea have confirmed the speculated visit, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has noted the visit is in planning stages, pending an official announcement.
Russia and North Korea remain embroiled in separate conflicts with the United States, involving Russia's Ukraine invasion and North Korea's nuclear ambitions, with both nations denying allegations of arms transfers which would contravene UN Security Council resolutions.
