NK Premchandran, an MP from the Revolutionary Socialist Party, announced Monday that the opposition might field its own candidate for the Speaker's post if the government fails to foster consensus on a candidate for the crucial role.

The MP's remarks came as opposition leaders refused to join the panel assisting the pro-tem Speaker, signifying mounting tensions. Premchandran noted that typically, the government discusses with opposition parties to agree on a consensus candidate; however, no such effort had been made.

The ruling BJP has started consulting with its coalition partners, but remains tight-lipped about its choice, while the opposition prepares for a potential contest. The opposition's protest included boycotting the panel aiding the pro-tem Speaker, arguing that conventions were breached in appointing the current pro-tem Speaker.
