Maharashtra Congress Chief Nana Patole launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led state government on Thursday for passing supplementary demands worth Rs 94,000 crore without any discussion in the state assembly. Patole accused the Eknath Shinde-led government of ‘murdering democracy’ by bypassing proper legislative procedures.

Supplementary demands are additional funds requested by the government on top of the existing budget. “The government is murdering democracy in the House. They waved off the debts of industrialists while seeking funds for various schemes aimed at our sisters,” said Patole during a media briefing in Mumbai.

Patole further charged the government with acting ‘arbitrarily’ and pledged to address the issue in the legislature. He also accused the state government of siding with Mihir Shah, the main accused in a hit-and-run case that claimed the life of a 45-year-old woman, Kaveri Nakhwa. “The government is not supporting the victim; it is protecting the accused,” he alleged.

Patole also claimed that the Maharashtra government received a call from Delhi to ‘save’ Shah. Mihir Shah was apprehended by police after evading capture since the incident occurred on July 7. His father, Rajesh Shah, has been removed from his position as Deputy Leader of Shiv Sena following directives from Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

A Mumbai court has remanded Mihir Shah to police custody until July 16. The arrest came after Mumbai police formed fourteen teams to track him down.
