Donald Trump vowed on Sunday to continue to the Republican convention, where he is expected to be officially nominated as the presidential candidate, after an assassination attempt heightened political tensions in the U.S.

On Saturday, a 20-year-old man armed with an AR-15-style rifle managed to get dangerously close, firing from a rooftop and hitting Trump in the right ear during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump, protected by Secret Service agents, sustained only a superficial wound.

The FBI identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, but the motive remains unclear. Both parties are investigating Crooks' political ties. Trump, seeking reelection against Joe Biden, expressed determination and unity on social media, while Biden's campaign temporarily suspended ads post-incident. The Secret Service is under scrutiny for alleged security lapses, and citizens are alarmed by rising political violence.
