Pakistan's government is taking steps to ban former Prime Minister Imran Khan's political party, PTI, and pursue treason charges, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced on Monday. The decision, rooted in accusations of illegal foreign funding and riots by PTI supporters, is pending cabinet approval.

The government plans to present a case for banning PTI and will file treason charges against Khan and former President Arif Alvi before the Supreme Court. Zulfikar Bukhari, an aide to Khan, labeled the decision as a move towards 'soft martial law' and a sign of government panic.

Further compounding the issue, PTI's recent gains in parliament and lobbying efforts in Washington against Pakistan's elections have fueled the government's action plan. Khan, who was acquitted recently on separate charges, remains incarcerated due to new arrest orders.
