On Monday, the BJP launched a scathing attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following her statement about offering shelter to people from Bangladesh, who are facing violent protests. The BJP accused Banerjee of justifying infiltration into the state.
Former Union minister and BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad addressed reporters, revealing concerns about any efforts that could weaken India's unity and integrity. Prasad criticized Banerjee's remarks on fostering good relations between Bengal and India, emphasizing that the state is intrinsically part of the nation.
At a Kolkata rally, Banerjee reiterated her intent to shelter distressed Bangladeshis in light of the deteriorating situation across the border. Prasad recalled India's historical stance on such matters, referencing the 1971 war when the Indian government decided to offer shelter to Bangladeshis.
He pointed out Banerjee's consistent opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, highlighting a perceived contradiction in her willingness to support infiltrators. The BJP leader further alleged that Banerjee's policies have led to significant demographic changes in West Bengal, with an increase in Muslim-majority districts and a rising influx of people from Bangladesh.
Prasad also touched upon concerns about terror-related activities, indicating that many accused individuals in such cases have found refuge in West Bengal. He concluded by noting the violent attacks on BJP and RSS members who advocate nationalism in the state.
