US Vice President Kamala Harris has called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to promptly finalize a ceasefire agreement with Hamas, aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Gaza, as civilian casualties mount. Addressing reporters after her White House meeting with Netanyahu on Thursday, Harris underscored the urgent humanitarian crisis.
"The images of dead children and desperate hungry people fleeing for safety cannot be ignored," Harris stated. Emphasizing the right to self-defense, she highlighted the necessity of addressing human suffering. Stressing the need for nuance in understanding the conflict, Harris also called for progress toward a two-state solution.
Previously on Thursday, Netanyahu met with President Joe Biden. The Israeli leader faces significant domestic and international pressure to conclude the nine-month-long war. During her discussion with Netanyahu, Harris expressed serious concerns about the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and the escalating food insecurity impacting millions.
Harris mentioned a US-proposed ceasefire and hostage deal which could lead to a permanent cessation of hostilities. "It is time for this war to end," she affirmed, urging the completion of the deal to secure Israel and release all hostages. Advocating for unity, Harris condemned terrorism and violence, emphasizing the importance of addressing antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of hate.
