The Biden administration has highlighted India's status as a global power, though it will never be a formal ally or partner of the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell made these remarks during a Senate hearing on U.S.-China competitiveness, pointing to India's desire for responsible global engagement.
Amidst indications that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may visit Kyiv, Campbell underscored India's independent beliefs and interests. "India has its own unique stance and will never be a formal ally, but it holds a critically important relationship with the U.S.," Campbell told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Campbell mentioned India's significant influence in the Global South, particularly in Africa, where it seeks to work closely with the U.S. He also praised the educational, technological, and military cooperation between the two nations, noting that this relationship aligns greatly with U.S. interests. Modi's recent visit to Russia and his call for peace in Ukraine underscore India's strategic global role.
